Sanctuary AI introduced the seventh generation of its Phoenix humanoid robot
Vancouver-based Sanctuary AI is on a mission to create the world's first human-like intelligent general-purpose robot. The company recently unveiled the seventh generation of Phoenix, its general-purpose robot. In parallel, the 7th-gen Phoenix and its AI control system, Carbon, inch closer to human-like behavior by implementing several hardware and AI-powered software improvements. Sanctuary AI is launching the 7th-gen Phoenix less than a year after presenting its sixth-generation robot and a little under 16 months after the fifth-generation robot was first made commercially available.
Sanctuary AI is tackling the artificial general intelligence problem by mimicking human brain and body subsystems. The Carbon AI control system is designed to replicate the memory, sight, sound, and touch subsystems. The Carbon control system can be combined with the Phoenix general-purpose robots to tackle a diversity of tasks that can eventually be applied to work more safely, efficiently, and sustainably, as well as to tackle many of the labor challenges currently faced by organizations and enterprises.
In addition to 7th-gen Phoenix being Sanctuary's most sophisticated human behavioral data capture technology available, the parallel launch of the latest Phoenix and Carbon brings a series of advancements, including increased uptime for training and data capture, increased building and commissioning speed to bring more units online faster, lower manufacturing costs, improved miniaturized hydraulics that reduce weight, power consumption and complexity while exceeding safety standards, improved vision and tactile sensing that leads to higher-fidelity Carbon training data, and faster turnaround for teaching new skills, from weeks to under 24 hours.
According to Geordie Rose, CEO and co-founder of Sanctuary AI, the seventh-generation Phoenix is the closest the company has gotten to a human analog, which the company considers to be a critical step towards artificial general intelligence.
