Metaplane was created to solve two issues frequently arising when the amount and complexity of the data that a team handles increase: as the amount of data grows, the arising of problems that go unnoticed also increases, given that the team's resources to deal with the growing amounts of data remain more or less stable. In contrast, because customers only need to pay attention to the data that serves them at a given time, they tend to be the first to notice a data issue. These dynamics create a vicious circle where customers may lose trust in the data, which leads to reduced data usage. This, in turn, means that data teams need to spend yet more time tracking issues and solving them, making data maintenance feel "like a Sisyphean task of pushing a boulder up a hill."

To address the problems of lost time and trust in data, Metaplane has focused on developing a platform that provides an end-to-end automated data observability solution based on effective metadata extraction. The Metaplane platform helps data teams realize when an issue happened, what went wrong, and how to prevent it. Most importantly, it aims to do this before said issues reach downstream users and customers. Over the last year, Metaplane has delivered its goal by launching over 50 products, thus covering the data observability needs for many data team profiles. Metaplane's integrations also guarantee that teams can observe their data at all stages of their workflows and will receive timely notifications on the chosen channels.

The company has stated that the recently closed Series A funding round will allow Metaplane to help 10,000 companies remain confident that they are always working with trustworthy data. The funding round was led by Felicis Ventures, with the participation of existing and new investors. The existing investors include Khosla Ventures, Y Combinator, Flybridge Capital Partners, and Stage 2 Capital. New investor B37 Ventures is funding the company for the first time.
