Anthropic has launched Claude for Google Workspace in public beta for paid Claude plans, adding its assistant directly to Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides. The add-on can read and edit the open file in a sidebar, while separate connectors let users create or change Google files without leaving Claude.

That creates a two-way workflow: Claude acts as an in-context editor inside Google’s productivity apps, while its own interface becomes a starting point for work saved to native Google files. The launch also puts Anthropic’s assistant in direct competition with Google’s built-in Gemini assistant across the same three applications.

Within Docs, Sheets, or Slides, Claude can use the current file and a user’s selected text, cells, or slides as context, then apply changes in place. Anthropic says the default “Ask before edits” mode requires approval before a change is made. Users may switch to “Accept all edits” for ordinary content changes, although some sensitive actions still require confirmation.

The Workspace add-on guide says the extension reads only the file currently open unless the user separately enables other connectors. On its own, the add-on cannot open, create, or copy other files in Google Drive.

Anthropic says Claude can revise text and headings in Docs while preserving nearby formatting. In Sheets, it can write formulas, build pivot tables and charts, add tabs, clean data, and write results back to the spreadsheet. In Slides, it can create slides using a deck’s existing layouts and themes and check for elements that overlap, sit off-slide, or are difficult to read. These are capability claims from Anthropic; the company did not publish beta usage, reliability, or productivity measurements in the materials reviewed.

The separate Google Workspace connectors work from Claude’s interface. Users can ask Claude to create a Doc, Sheet, or Slides deck, or paste a link to an existing file, then edit the live file in a pane beside the conversation. Anthropic says the user and Claude can work in the same file simultaneously, and Claude can access only files available to the connected Google account.

Anthropic lists the beta as available on Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans. Team and Enterprise workspaces require an Owner or Primary Owner to enable the Docs, Sheets, and Slides connectors before members can authenticate them. For context on broader enterprise deployment, DataPhoenix has covered Barclays’ expansion of Claude across engineering and markets.
