Apple Music will make 'Made With AI' disclosure labels mandatory

Apple has told music-industry partners that it will make its AI disclosure labels mandatory later in 2026. A visible ‘Made With AI’ tag will attach to any Apple Music track where generative AI produced a material share of the work.

The mandatory tags would cover four elements — the artwork, the composition or lyrics, the sound recording and the music video — and mark a shift from the honor system Apple launched in March 2026, when the same AI Transparency Tags were optional and self-reported.

The change lands as AI-generated music floods streaming catalogs. Apple Music vice president Oliver Schusser said in April 2026 that more than a third of monthly uploads to the service were entirely AI-generated, even though such tracks accounted for less than 0.5% of actual listening. The gap points to a large volume of machine-made music that few people play but that still clutters the catalog and complicates royalty accounting.

Mandatory labeling puts the disclosure burden on uploaders rather than leaving it to their discretion, and gives listeners a consistent signal about how a track was made.

Apple has not set an exact launch date, and it is not yet clear how the company will detect undisclosed AI content or enforce the requirement against distributors that ignore it. Rivals have moved unevenly on the same question, leaving no industry standard for what counts as ‘made with AI.’ Until Apple names a date and a penalty, the mandatory label remains a stated intention rather than a live policy.
