OpenAI ships ChatGPT desktop app for Linux in preview, bundling Codex

OpenAI released an official ChatGPT desktop app for Linux in preview, bundling ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and its Codex coding environment in a single client, the company said in a developer-community post on August 11, 2026. It is distributed as .deb and .rpm packages for Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, and Fedora 43 and 44 on x64 and ARM64 systems.

The app closes a long-standing gap: OpenAI had shipped desktop clients for macOS and Windows but left Linux users, a core developer audience, without an official option. Codex inside the app provides a development environment for writing and debugging code, running tests, reviewing changes, and working with local repositories, folders, and terminals.

The preview has limits. Automated agent and computer-use control is restricted to the app’s built-in in-app browser only, so the broader machine-control features available elsewhere are not present on Linux yet.

Community users flagged further gaps: there is no Flatpak or AppImage packaging, the app does not recognize existing Codex CLI projects as integrated projects, and some users reported input-method and display-scaling problems on Wayland setups.

For a preview aimed at developers, the packaging and integration rough edges are the details that will determine adoption. Whether OpenAI closes them, or leaves Linux a second-class client behind macOS and Windows, is the thing to watch.
