Anthropic expands Claude Cowork to web and mobile, says most use isn't coding

Anthropic expanded Claude Cowork, its autonomous task-agent product, from a desktop-only app to the web and to iOS and Android on July 7, 2026, the company said.

The product runs multi-step tasks on a user’s behalf, and the cross-device design is the point: a job can start on a laptop, keep running in the background after the laptop is closed, and be checked or finished from a phone. It pings the user when it needs an in-the-loop decision.

Access begins as a beta for Claude Max subscribers, with the company saying it will extend to other plans in the coming weeks.

More striking than the platform expansion is what the usage data shows. Anthropic said an analysis of 1.2 million anonymized sessions from May found that more than 90% of Cowork activity is not software development. The largest categories are business operations and content creation, which together account for about half of all use.

That cuts against the framing of agentic tools as mainly a coding story. The figures are Anthropic’s own and cover a single month, so they describe how early adopters use the beta rather than a settled pattern.
