Google rebuilt Google Images around a personalized discovery feed and added AI image generation inside search results to mark the product’s 25th anniversary on July 14, 2026. The image-search tool, which launched in 2001, now opens to a real-time ‘For You’ gallery instead of a blank search bar.

The redesign borrows heavily from Pinterest: the homepage shows a scrolling, personalized wall of images users can save into collection tabs, shifting the product from a place you query to a place you browse. It is Google’s clearest attempt yet to turn image search into a discovery surface.

The bigger change is generative. Google is adding AI image creation, built on what it calls its latest Nano Banana model, directly into AI Overviews, so a text prompt can produce a custom image without leaving the results page. That folds a creation tool into the spot where Google already answers queries, rather than sending users to a separate app.

Rollout is limited at first. The redesigned homepage begins on desktop in the United States in English over the coming weeks, while the AI Overviews image generation expands to every region that already supports image creation in AI Mode.

Baking image generation into search raises familiar questions Google did not address in detail, including how it labels AI-made images and how a discovery feed and synthetic pictures reshape traffic to the photographers and websites that image search has long sent visitors to. Whether the ‘For You’ feed lifts engagement or just crowds the results page is what the coming weeks of rollout will show.
