Google Play adds a private path for AI Studio-built Android apps

Google Play now gives eligible adults in select markets a private way to run Android apps built with Google AI Studio on their own devices—no developer account or public store listing required.

Google Play has begun letting adults launch personal Android apps made with Google AI Studio on their own devices without opening a developer account or publishing the apps in its public store. A standard Google account is all they need to use the new path.

For now, each app is available only to its creator on that person’s device. The apps stay outside Google Play’s public catalog, providing a private way to run projects made in Google AI Studio rather than a route to a public listing. The rollout started Oct. 13 for users aged 18 and older in select markets, including the United States.

The private Android path follows Google’s launch of a separate prompt-built game creator for U.S. adults. The AI Studio rollout starts with a narrower access boundary: only each app’s creator can use it.

Google did not list every market in the initial rollout. The announcement also left open how creator-only apps will be reviewed, scanned, updated or removed, as well as what permissions and data-handling rules will apply.

Sharing will come later. Google said it plans to let creators share personal apps with a close circle of friends and family in the coming months. The company did not give a release date or say how many people that circle could include.

Creators who eventually want to distribute an app publicly will be able to move to a professional developer account. Google said those apps will then face the same Trust & Safety reviews and quality standards as apps from other professional developers.
