Lingo.dev Raises $4.2M to Automate App Localization Using AI

Lingo.dev (previously Replexica), a startup offering an AI-powered localization engine for developers, has secured $4.2 million in seed funding led by Initialized Capital, with participation from Y Combinator and various angel investors. The company aims for its product to become the equivalent of Stripe for UI localization. Roughly, this means that Lingo.dev is looking to save developers the hassle of manually copy-pasting text from sources like ChatGPT to translate standalone text or handling multiple translation files by providing them with a product that fully automates the task of localizing an app's UI, leaving developers to focus on shipping their code.

Founded by Max Prilutskiy and Veronica Prilutskaya, Lingo.dev provides a localization engine that developers can connect to through the proprietary CLI, integrate directly to their CI/CD systems, leverage via the proprietary JavaScript SDK or even hook to some AI tools (Cursor, Claude desktop, and Cline for VS Code) via Model Context Protocol. The platform uses a combination of large language models from providers like Anthropic and OpenAI to ensure optimal translations for different contexts. Lingo.dev goes beyond simple translation by offering features like translation memory, brand voice customization, and context awareness. The platform can even analyze UI placement to prevent formatting issues caused by differing text lengths between the translated text and the source.

Already serving customers including French AI company Mistral AI and Cal.com, Lingo.dev is working on advanced features such as UI screenshot analysis for better context understanding, a beta feature for idiom translation, and improved handling of gender-specific language variations. The company plans to maintain a lean operation as it expands, drawing from the founders' experience running their previous successful bootstrapped startup, Notionlytics.
