LM Studio launches Bionic, a local desktop AI agent built on open-source models

LM Studio has launched Bionic, a standalone desktop AI agent app for macOS, Windows and Linux that runs open-source local models for coding, research and document work.

Bionic pushes LM Studio beyond the local chat interface it is known for into agentic workflows that run on a user’s own machine, an answer to privacy-conscious developers wary of sending code and documents to cloud models. LM Studio released the app on July 16, 2026.

The most newsworthy features are practical: repo-aware code editing with inline diffs and agentic code search, plus PDF, spreadsheet and document processing inside a sandboxed environment. Bionic also ships with offline voice transcription at launch, running Mistral AI’s Voxtral model locally. Users can run models fully on-device, over LM Link, or via LM Studio Secure Cloud for frontier open-weight models too large to run locally, the company said in its Bionic announcement.

LM Studio said it commits to zero data retention and will never train on user data — a claim that, like any vendor privacy pledge, users cannot independently audit from the outside.

The bet is that local agents become a real alternative to cloud assistants for sensitive work. Whether Bionic’s on-device performance holds up against cloud-hosted rivals on large codebases is what early adopters will test first.
