Apptopia estimates Meta’s Muse led ChatGPT in early iOS downloads

Apptopia estimated that Meta’s Muse recorded 1.8 million iOS downloads in the United States and Canada during its first 12 days, versus an estimated 1.3 million for ChatGPT at the same point after its mobile launch, according to the first-12-day estimates published September 21. The comparison matches the apps by platform, geography and time since release rather than measuring total global adoption.

At the same stage, Apptopia estimated that Muse had reached 642,000 mobile daily active users in the United States, versus 231,000 for ChatGPT. That comparison is less like-for-like: the Muse total includes iOS and Android, while ChatGPT had launched only on iOS during its corresponding first 12 days. In a separate iOS-only measure, Apptopia put Muse at 359,000 U.S. daily active users and said it was ahead of ChatGPT. The published figures did not include ChatGPT’s corresponding iOS-only total.

These download and activity figures are third-party estimates, not usage data confirmed by Meta or OpenAI. Apptopia’s underlying dataset and methodology were not available in the opened sources. The 12-day window also does not establish retention, paid conversion, revenue or longer-term adoption.

Meta introduced Muse on September 8 and said the personal AI agent was rolling out in the United States on iOS, Android and the web. OpenAI launched the ChatGPT iOS app on May 18, 2023, beginning in the United States with Android still forthcoming. Its iOS availability expanded to 11 countries on May 24, six days into ChatGPT’s comparison window.
