Microsoft begins merging its consumer and 365 Copilot apps into one client

Microsoft began rolling out a unified Copilot app that merges its consumer Microsoft Copilot with Microsoft 365 Copilot into a single client, the company said in a support notice. The combined app lets users sign in with a personal account, a work or school account, or both, and preserves existing enterprise security, compliance, and privacy controls for work accounts.

The rollout starts the week of August 13, 2026 with Windows Insiders. Mobile consumers must move to the new app by late August, with existing chats preserved, and the worldwide Windows and macOS desktop rollout follows in mid-September.

The unified app adds direct access to Word, Excel, Outlook, and other Microsoft 365 apps and files, and moves file storage to OneDrive. Three features are being retired by August 18: Group Chat, Podcasts, and Deep Research, the last for consumer accounts.

The consolidation has been reported as a step toward a broader unified Copilot ‘super app’ expected later in 2026, combining chat, Microsoft’s Cowork feature, coding, and an agentic Autopilot tier.

Merging a free consumer product with a paid enterprise one is a delicate move: the same app now spans personal accounts and corporate data governed by very different rules. For users, the immediate cost is the three retired features; the payoff Microsoft is promising arrives only if the ‘super app’ ships as described later this year.
