Midjourney acquires astrology app Co-Star and names its founder design chief

Midjourney has made the first acquisition in its history, buying social astrology app Co-Star and naming Co-Star founder Banu Guler as its chief design officer, the AI image company said. The deal closed earlier in spring 2026, and financial terms were not disclosed.

The purchase marks a turn for Midjourney, which built its business on a Discord-based image-generation service and is now assembling a broader consumer software company. In Midjourney’s announcement, founder David Holz framed the Co-Star deal as the first of half a dozen projects the company plans to reveal over the next six months, including one called “Midjourney Medical.”

Co-Star brings about 4.3 million monthly active users. The app generates horoscopes and compatibility readings from users’ birth charts, using a mix of automated systems and human writing. Its roughly two dozen employees join Midjourney, and the app will keep operating under Guler, who as chief design officer will lead product, design and frontend teams across the company.

The logic of pairing an image-generation firm with an astrology app is not obvious, and Midjourney did not detail how Co-Star’s technology or audience feed its wider plans. Holz has said the company wants to move beyond image generation into a standalone consumer app, and the acquisition gives it an existing product, a design leader and a user base to build on.

What the deal does not reveal is price. With terms undisclosed, the acquisition’s scale relative to Midjourney’s other planned projects, and the resources behind “Midjourney Medical,” remain unknown.

Whether the promised half-dozen projects arrive on schedule will show whether the Co-Star purchase was a one-off or the start of a buying run.
