Mistral AI launched Mistral Large 4 in public preview on October 6, with the model available through its API as mistral-large-4. Mistral’s documentation describes an open-weight, general-purpose multimodal model built on a granular mixture-of-experts architecture.

Mistral documents 49 billion active parameters, 1.05 trillion total parameters and a 1.6-billion-parameter vision encoder. The model page also lists a one-million-token context window.

According to the model page, the preview supports chat completions, structured outputs, function calling, document question answering, batch processing, agents and conversations, and built-in tools. Large 4 joins Mistral’s lineup alongside Mistral Small 4, which Mozilla is adding to Firefox Smart Window.

Mistral has made comparative performance and specialized capability claims for Large 4. Those characterizations remain issuer claims, not independently validated results; the launch-day sources reviewed for this story did not include an independent benchmark evaluation. The preview documentation also does not identify a specific repository, license terms or a release date for downloadable weights.
