Moonshot AI's Kimi K3 nears launch, reportedly aiming at Claude Opus 4.8

Moonshot AI is preparing to ship Kimi K3, a flagship model reported to rival or surpass Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.8, with a release expected within days of July 16, 2026. K3 branding is already live on the company’s kimi.com product site, though Moonshot has not published a launch post.

A release would sharpen the competition between well-funded Chinese labs and US frontier developers. Kimi K3 is described as a Mixture-of-Experts model at roughly 2 trillion to 3 trillion total parameters, though Moonshot has not formally confirmed its specifications.

The model has not shipped. As of July 16, the specification and benchmark claims rest on reporting and the visible product-page branding rather than a company announcement, and Moonshot has not released performance results.

Separately, Moonshot is reported to be raising fresh capital at a $31.5 billion valuation. That would be up from the $20 billion valuation it carried on a $2 billion round closed in May 2026, a jump that tracks the surge of investor money into frontier-model startups.

A confirmed release with published benchmarks would show whether K3 actually closes the gap with Opus 4.8, or whether the pre-launch billing outruns the model.
