OpenAI discontinues standalone ChatGPT Atlas browser, folds agentic browsing into ChatGPT desktop

OpenAI said on July 9, 2026 that it will discontinue ChatGPT Atlas, its standalone desktop browser, less than a year after launching it, with the shutdown scheduled for August 9, 2026. Atlas first shipped in October 2025 as the company’s bet on agentic web browsing, where the software carries out multi-step tasks online rather than just answering questions.

Rather than kill the feature set, OpenAI is redistributing it across three surfaces, the company said in a post on making ChatGPT a hub for ambitious work. A more capable browser now lives inside the ChatGPT desktop app, able to visit websites, log into accounts, download files and interact with pages without the user leaving ChatGPT. A Google Chrome extension brings similar browsing to the world’s most-used browser, and a separate cloud browser runs remotely on OpenAI’s servers so agents can complete tasks on a user’s behalf.

OpenAI said the new browsing features draw on what it learned from Atlas users during the standalone browser’s run.

The retirement fits a broader push to make ChatGPT desktop — with ChatGPT Work and the Codex coding integration alongside it — a single hub for agentic tasks rather than a scatter of separate apps. It also shows how quickly OpenAI will cut a product that fails to become the center of gravity: Atlas lasted about eight months from launch to deprecation notice.

Existing Atlas users have until August 9 to move to the replacement surfaces. Whether the Chrome extension and cloud browser match what the standalone browser did by that cutoff will decide if the migration is a clean upgrade or a step back.
