Sam Altman expected to attend Trump-Xi state dinner

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is expected to attend the Sept. 24 White House state dinner for Chinese President Xi Jinping. His expected presence would bring the head of a major US artificial intelligence company to a high-level diplomatic event during Xi’s state visit, hosted by President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump.

The White House schedule for the visit says Trump and the first lady will host Xi and Peng Liyuan for an East Room state dinner on Thursday evening. It does not name dinner guests or set out an artificial intelligence agenda, confirming the event but not Altman’s attendance.

Altman’s expected appearance would also place OpenAI’s chief executive in a diplomatic setting as the company navigates U.S. policy questions around coordination among frontier AI labs. The White House schedule does not announce an AI policy discussion or outcome for the dinner or the wider visit.

The White House said additional state-dinner details would follow on Sept. 23.
