Sony and UMG file new copyright lawsuit against Suno

Sony Music, UMG Recordings and affiliated labels filed a new federal copyright lawsuit against Suno in Massachusetts on September 18, opening a separate case alongside the labels’ 2024 action. No court has decided the infringement allegations.

The new case, 1:26-cv-14275, names Suno and unidentified defendants. It has been assigned to U.S. District Judge F. Dennis Saylor IV, includes a jury demand and is classified on the docket as a copyright action.

The filing follows Suno’s September launch of three v6 music models developed with label partners. In its v6 announcement, Suno described the release as a new model generation developed with Warner Music Group, BMG and Believe. The company also said it would retire earlier models as v6 rolled out. Whether Suno infringed the labels’ recordings, or whether v6 carries forward any alleged infringement from earlier models, remains unresolved.

The original Massachusetts lawsuit, case 1:24-cv-11611, was filed in June 2024 and initially identified 560 recordings. In an August 18 order, Saylor denied without prejudice the plaintiffs’ request to add 61,026 works to that case. He found that parallel cases better balanced delay, prejudice and judicial economy, while noting that the labels could file a separate action.
