Trump rejects global AI control system in UN speech

President Donald Trump told the United Nations General Assembly that the United States rejects efforts to construct a global system for controlling artificial intelligence. In his September 22 address to the General Assembly’s 81st session, Trump said the United States “totally rejects” attempts to construct such a global control system. The official release and UN transcript do not identify a pact text, negotiating instrument, vote or withdrawal.

The position enters a wider policy debate over US-led global AI standards. The White House release and UN transcript do not specify which international proposals Trump intended to include in the control system he opposed.

Trump also said US documents would use the term “super intelligence” instead of “artificial intelligence.” The UN transcript of the address contains the proposal but does not establish that the terminology change has been implemented outside the speech.

On domestic oversight, Trump said his administration would encourage development rather than rein it in, while monitoring the technology through the Justice Department and other law-enforcement bodies that could intervene if necessary.
