Uber and Pony.ai plan to deploy more than 2,000 robotaxis across Europe

Uber and Pony.ai said on Aug. 13 they will deploy more than 2,000 robotaxis across Europe, expanding beyond the commercial service the two already run in Zagreb, Croatia.

The expanded partnership moves autonomous ride-hailing from one-off city pilots toward fleet-scale operations. The companies plan to add four more European cities to the Zagreb launch, which runs with mobility partner Verne, and said further deployment in the Middle East is also planned. Details of the phased rollout will come later.

“This expanded agreement marks an important new phase in the partnership between Pony.ai and Uber,” said Dr. James Peng, Pony.ai’s founder and chief executive. Sarfraz Maredia, Uber’s global head of autonomous mobility and delivery, said the next chapter for autonomous mobility is “about moving from individual launches to repeatable commercial scale.”

The deal builds on plans the two first announced in May 2025 to bring Pony.ai robotaxis onto the Uber platform internationally. For Uber, it deepens a strategy of supplying the demand and the app while partners supply the self-driving technology and vehicles. For Pony.ai, a Chinese autonomous-driving company, it opens a route into European markets that would be hard to enter alone.

The headline number is a target, not a count of cars on the road; neither company said how many of the 2,000-plus vehicles will operate this year or which cities come first. Robotaxi rollouts also hinge on local permits that vary by country.

Whether the four unnamed cities and a firm timeline arrive on schedule — or slip, as autonomous-vehicle expansions often do — will show if 2,000 robotaxis is a plan or a press release.
