3M and Microsoft partner on AI data-center optics, with Azure first to deploy
3M and Microsoft announced a partnership on July 15, 2026 making Microsoft Azure the first hyperscaler to deploy 3M's Expanded Beam Optical connector technology.
3M and Microsoft announced a strategic partnership spanning AI data-center infrastructure and enterprise automation, Microsoft said on July 15, 2026. Microsoft Azure will be the first announced hyperscaler to deploy 3M’s Expanded Beam Optical connector technology.
The deal ties a materials-science supplier to a cloud giant at a moment when data-center operators are hunting for faster, more reliable ways to wire up AI clusters. 3M’s Expanded Beam Optical, or EBO, connectors avoid direct-contact fiber links, which the companies say makes them quicker to install, more tolerant of contamination and easier to maintain. Microsoft said early use has shown potential to shorten network-deployment timelines and delivered strong signal performance in live data-center conditions.
Separately, 3M will adopt Microsoft’s AI and digital platforms across its own operations, with engineers from Microsoft Frontier Company helping automate customer-order tasks such as credit checks, delinquency assessments and system updates.
Cliff Henson, a Microsoft corporate vice president, said the EBO deployment helps “unlock new levels of performance, reliability and efficiency” for cloud and AI workloads. Jon Van Wyck, 3M’s chief strategy officer, said the company views AI as a tool to “accelerate growth, improve customer experiences and help our teams work more effectively.”
The performance claims are the companies’ own and reflect early deployment rather than published benchmarks. How widely Azure rolls out EBO connectors, and whether the installation-time gains hold at scale, will show if the technology is more than a pilot.
