Broadcom seeks more than $50 billion for OpenAI chip financing

Broadcom is reportedly seeking more than $50 billion for custom OpenAI chips, a potential expansion of its private-capital model for AI infrastructure.

Broadcom is seeking to arrange more than $50 billion in financing for custom artificial intelligence chips it is developing with OpenAI, according to people familiar with the discussions. The talks remain at an early stage: no formal process has begun, and the plans could change.

If it proceeds, the financing would take Broadcom beyond designing and supplying chips by adding a role in arranging capital for OpenAI’s buildout. The published materials from Broadcom and OpenAI reviewed for this story do not confirm the talks or any proposed terms. The available reporting also does not reconcile the more-than-$50-billion figure with a separate estimate of roughly $30 billion in possible debt.

If completed, the financing would build on a private-capital model Broadcom already has in place. In June, Broadcom established an AI infrastructure platform with Apollo Global Management and Blackstone to finance more than 20 gigawatts of Broadcom-based computing capacity for frontier AI labs, including Anthropic and OpenAI, through 2028.

The platform began with a $35 billion capital solution led by Apollo, alongside Blackstone and global banks, to support more than one gigawatt of Anthropic computing infrastructure. Apollo said the committed capital would be delivered on a multiyear draw schedule, allowing funding to arrive as the infrastructure is built instead of all at once.

This possible chip financing is separate from equity investment in OpenAI. For context, SoftBank completed its final $10 billion OpenAI investment tranche earlier this month.

OpenAI calls the chip Jalapeño and describes it as the company’s first Intelligence Processor, built for large-language-model inference. OpenAI designed the processor, while Broadcom and Celestica are helping industrialize it through chip implementation, systems integration, networking and production. OpenAI says the platform is intended for initial deployment by the end of 2026.

The chip is part of a broader 10-gigawatt custom-accelerator collaboration that Broadcom and OpenAI announced in October 2025. The companies said rack deployments were expected to begin in the second half of 2026 and finish by the end of 2029. The opened sources do not identify a borrower or disclose lender commitments, pricing, maturity, collateral, a repayment structure or a closing timetable.
