SoftBank completes final $10 billion OpenAI investment tranche
SoftBank has completed its $30 billion follow-on investment in OpenAI after executing the third and final $10 billion tranche.
SoftBank Group said it executed the third and final $10 billion tranche of its 2026 follow-on investment in OpenAI on October 1, completing the $30 billion commitment it announced earlier in the year. The investment went through SoftBank Vision Fund 2.
With the closing, SoftBank’s disclosed cumulative investment in OpenAI stands at $64.6 billion. The company said it now holds an ownership interest of approximately 13%. SoftBank valued the latest tranche at 1.5796 trillion yen, based on an exchange rate of 157.96 yen per US dollar.
SoftBank’s February agreement split the follow-on investment into three $10 billion tranches scheduled for April 1, July 1 and October 1. The company executed the first tranche in April and the second tranche in July. The preferred shares are set to convert automatically into common shares if OpenAI completes an initial public offering or a related listing transaction.
SoftBank said proceeds from foreign-currency-denominated senior notes announced on September 24 funded the third tranche. Effective September 30, the company canceled the remaining $10 billion of undrawn capacity under a $40 billion bridge facility after repaying all borrowings. No undrawn commitments remain.
OpenAI announced $30 billion commitments from both SoftBank and Nvidia in February as part of $110 billion in new investment at a $730 billion pre-money valuation. SoftBank’s October statement confirms that its own commitment has now been fully executed. In March, OpenAI said it had closed the round with $122 billion in committed capital at an $852 billion post-money valuation.
The completed SoftBank investment comes as OpenAI reportedly explores another funding round. That potential financing is separate from the round covered here.
