Databricks brings Genie One MCP to general availability in Unity Gateway

Databricks made Genie One MCP generally available as a managed service in Unity Gateway. The move gives compatible AI assistants and agents a route to query Genie under Unity Catalog permissions. It also starts a migration clock: Databricks says the previous beta endpoint is deprecated and will shut down on October 31, 2026.

The generally available service is exposed as system.ai.genie_one_mcp. Compatible Model Context Protocol clients, including Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor, can submit natural-language questions to Genie through the service. Databricks describes Genie One MCP as a conversational tool that searches enterprise data the caller is permitted to use, generates SQL and returns answers grounded in Genie Ontology, with deep links to cited Databricks sources.

The service creates a governed enterprise access path within the broader Model Context Protocol tool ecosystem. According to Databricks’ documentation, Unity Catalog permissions apply to every request, limiting queries and results to data the user or agent is authorized to access. Unity Catalog grants control who can invoke the service, while Unity Gateway service policies can allow or deny individual tool calls. Databricks also says invocations are recorded for usage tracking and audits.

For authentication, Databricks recommends on-behalf-of user OAuth, which preserves the calling user’s identity and permissions. Service-principal authentication is also supported for programmatic and automated workloads.

The service replaces the beta route at /api/2.0/mcp/genie. Databricks directed users of that endpoint to migrate their workloads to system.ai.genie_one_mcp before the October 31 shutdown. The company also notes that platform releases are staged, so an account may receive the generally available service a week or more after the initial release date.
