Google renames NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook and adds native code execution

Google renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook and added native code execution, running through a secure per-notebook cloud sandbox, the company said on July 16, 2026.

The rebrand folds one of Google’s most-used AI products deeper into the Gemini line, and the sandbox turns a research-and-summarizing tool into one that can run code against a user’s own material. Google says Gemini Notebook has more than 30 million users across over 600,000 organizations.

The code-execution feature is live today for Google AI Ultra subscribers and Workspace customers with AI Ultra or AI Expanded Access, with a wider rollout to Pro-tier users planned over the coming weeks. Notebooks will also sync across the Gemini app and Google Search.

Google has not detailed the sandbox’s compute limits or which languages it runs, and the per-notebook isolation is the company’s own description. The change also continues a run of Google product renamings that has left users tracking shifting names.

Whether the code sandbox reaches Pro users on the promised timeline, and how tightly the isolation holds in practice, will show if this is a real capability jump or mostly a new label.
