Meta has quietly become one of Microsoft’s largest AI customers, reportedly spending hundreds of millions of dollars a year for AI-model access through Microsoft Azure and consuming trillions of tokens each week. The arrangement has not been disclosed by either company.

The detail complicates the usual map of AI rivalries. Meta builds its own models and runs its own cloud ambitions, yet is reportedly paying a competitor at scale for model access — a sign of how tangled buyer-and-rival relationships have become across the industry.

According to the reporting, Meta developers also use OpenAI models inside Azure AI Foundry, Microsoft’s platform for building AI applications, to benchmark the output of Meta’s own models. That would put Meta in the position of measuring its homegrown systems against a rival’s through a third party’s cloud.

The specifics are single-sourced and unconfirmed. The dollar figure, the token volume, Meta’s precise rank among Microsoft’s customers, and the benchmarking claim all rest on one account, and both companies declined to comment. Neither has published anything describing the relationship.

If accurate, the arrangement points to a structural feature of the current AI build-out: even the best-funded model developers lean on rivals’ infrastructure and models to move fast, and the lines between customer, competitor and supplier keep blurring. Confirmation, if it comes, would more likely surface in Microsoft’s cloud disclosures or Meta’s spending guidance than in any announcement from either side.
