Micron commits $10 billion to a decade-long AI-memory research campus in Boise

Micron Technology said on August 20, 2026 that it will invest $10 billion over a decade in Micron Research Labs, a new research campus in Boise, Idaho. The site will focus on memory technologies, compute architectures, advanced packaging and future semiconductor manufacturing, with construction set to begin in 2027.

The commitment is a long-horizon bet that memory sits at the center of the AI build-out. The planned research hub is designed to hold hundreds of researchers and to bring together customers, academia, government and the wider chip industry under one roof, the company said.

Memory has become a bottleneck as much as a component. The high-bandwidth memory that feeds AI accelerators is in short supply, and makers including Micron, Samsung and SK Hynix have been among the clearer beneficiaries of AI-driven demand. A dedicated research campus signals Micron wants to shape the next generation of that technology rather than only ramp production of the current one.

Micron said the $10 billion pledge builds on more than $250 billion it has separately committed to U.S. manufacturing and research and development. The timing aligns with a broader push to expand domestic chip capacity, though a decade-long research program is a slower-burn commitment than a fab and will take years to show results.

The near-term test is narrower: Micron has set a 2027 construction start, and whether ground breaks on schedule will be the first concrete signal that the plan is on track rather than aspirational.
