French AI startup Mistral has raised $830 million in debt financing to purchase Nvidia GPUs and build its first data center near Paris, marking a significant step in Europe's AI infrastructure ambitions.

The debt was financed by a consortium of seven banks including Bpifrance, BNP Paribas, Crédit Agricole, HSBC, and MUFG. The funding will acquire 13,800 Nvidia GPUs for the facility in Bruyères-le-Châtel, set to become operational in Q2 2026.

Valued at €11.7 billion, Mistral positions itself as an open-source, sovereign alternative to US proprietary models from OpenAI and Anthropic. "Scaling our infrastructure in Europe is critical to empower our customers and ensure AI innovation and autonomy remain at the heart of Europe," said CEO Arthur Mensch.

The move addresses growing demand from European governments, enterprises, and research institutions seeking customized AI environments independent of third-party US cloud providers. Last month, Mistral also announced a $1.4 billion investment in Swedish AI infrastructure, targeting 200 megawatts of compute capacity across Europe by 2027.

Mistral has raised over €2.8 billion ($3.1 billion) in equity funding from investors including General Catalyst, a16z, and Lightspeed.
