Murata plans ¥1 trillion MLCC expansion through fiscal 2030
Murata plans about ¥1 trillion in MLCC investment over five fiscal years, with new buildings in Japan and Thailand and upgrades in the Philippines, as it prepares for data-center and broader AI demand.
Murata Manufacturing said on October 30 that it plans to invest approximately ¥1 trillion from fiscal 2026 through fiscal 2030 to expand global production of multilayer ceramic capacitors, or MLCCs.
Under the five-year capacity plan, roughly ¥350 billion is earmarked for buildings and ¥650 billion for production equipment. Murata forecasts that the investment will lift fiscal 2030 MLCC sales to at least twice the fiscal 2025 level. That target is the company’s projection, not an independently established outcome.
MLCCs are critical components in products ranging from smartphones and cars to industrial equipment and data-center hardware. Murata said the expansion responds to current data-center demand and anticipated AI deployment in edge devices, mobility and robotics.
In Japan, Murata plans to add facilities in Yasugi, Shimane Prefecture, and Setouchi, Okayama Prefecture. The company said the additions will create a three-site domestic MLCC production network comprising Okayama Murata Manufacturing, Fukui Murata Manufacturing and Izumo Murata Manufacturing.
Murata expects to spend about ¥150 billion at the Okayama site. An MLCC production building is due by the end of 2028, followed by a separate building for MLCC sheets and raw materials in 2030. The company said the site is intended to support 1,500 to 2,000 workers by 2030.
Outside Japan, the plan includes a new production building in Thailand for completion in 2030 and equipment and infrastructure work in an unused portion of an existing Philippine building by 2027. Existing plants in Japan, ASEAN and China are slated for annual equipment additions and capacity upgrades. Murata did not disclose individual amounts for those projects or a completion date or investment amount for the Yasugi facility.
