Nigeria election commission reviews suspected AI-generated voter-roll photos
Nigeria’s election commission is reviewing suspicious photographs and correcting its preliminary voter register ahead of scheduled Dec. 15 certification.
Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission said it was reviewing and correcting questionable records after concerns about suspicious photographs in a preliminary voter register that may have been generated by artificial intelligence.
The commission has not established that the disputed images were AI-generated. It said it was examining the circumstances, including possible technical or procedural lapses, and would act on verified findings.
INEC said the register published online on Oct. 26 was the same preliminary version displayed at registration areas nationwide from Oct. 9 to 15 for public claims and objections. According to the commission, the online copy preserved the original preliminary data and did not reflect all cleanup work already underway.
INEC said questionable records had been identified during the physical display, with review and corrective action already underway under its procedures. The commission stressed that the published register was not the final certified version.
The display process allows for public scrutiny and corrections before certification. INEC said verification, adjudication and data cleanup would be completed before the final Register of Voters is scheduled to be certified on Dec. 15, 2026.
The available evidence does not establish that any disputed record was used to vote or affected an election.
