Snowflake adds per-user quotas for AI and compute spending

Snowflake made per-user quotas generally available in its August 15–19 server release. Administrators can track each user against daily or monthly credit limits and receive notifications at configured thresholds. The controls can cover everyone in an account or subsets selected with tags.

The enforcement boundary is narrower than the tracking scope. Snowflake’s documentation says quotas can track warehouse compute, but built-in blocking does not stop warehouse usage. Automatic blocks apply only to supported AI domains and must be enabled; simply reaching a limit does not deny access.

At general availability, Snowflake listed AI Functions, Snowflake CoCo, Cortex Agents and Snowflake CoWork alongside warehouse compute as covered services in its release notes. Current documentation also lists AI Gateway among the AI domains eligible for built-in blocking.

A quota gives every covered user the same individual limits instead of pooling one allowance across the group. Administrators choose the credit threshold and cycle, and each user’s consumption is evaluated separately.

Blocking is not synchronous with a request. Snowflake says enforcement is evaluated within minutes after a spend event, so consumption can exceed the configured threshold before a block takes effect—particularly when a single request uses more than the remaining allowance.

Daily usage and blocks reset at 00:00 UTC. Monthly usage and blocks reset on the first day of the next UTC calendar month. Access can resume sooner if an administrator raises the limit above the user’s current consumption or removes the quota.

In a September 15 product post, Snowflake said the controls could make budgets more predictable and speed AI adoption. The post offered no customer outcome data to substantiate those claims, nor did it explain why it appeared about a month after the general-availability release.

Snowflake added a weekly quota cycle on September 16. Weekly usage follows the ISO week and resets each Monday at 00:00 UTC.
