AMD at CES 2025: new consumer chips for gaming, content creation and AI PCs
AMD announced its new Ryzen AI Max processor series at CES 2025, featuring up to 16 Zen 5 CPU cores, RDNA 3.5 graphics, and enhanced AI processing capabilities. The company also added more models to its Ryzen AI 300/300 PRO Series and introduced the more affordable 200/200 PRO Series.
We're kicking off the year with our CES 2025 coverage, starting with AMD keynote announcements of new AI PC chips. AMD introduced a new processor series, the Ryzen AI Max. These processors are designed to power thin and light workstations capable of handling the most demanding workloads, regardless of whether they require AI-enabled enterprise or content creation software.
Introducing the Ryzen AI Max/Max Pro Series
In addition to including up to 16 Zen 5 CPU cores, the Ryzen AI Max processors feature up to 128 GB of unified memory, from which up to 96 GB are available for graphics, which in turn are powered by up to 40 AMD RDNA 3.5 graphics compute units. To round things up, an AMD XDNA 2 Neural Processing Unit provides AI processing capabilities of up to 50 TOPS.
The Ryzen AI Max processor series comprises three AI Max processor models, and four AI Max PRO models. The latter feature AMD's PRO Technologies, which enhance the processors' capabilities with business-class security features and manageability tools to ensure long-term reliability and stability.
Ryzen AI/AI PRO 300 and 200 Series
Previously, AMD showcased Ryzen 9 processors belonging to the AI and AI PRO 300 Series. At CES, the company announced it would further strengthen that processor series with Ryzen 7 and 5 models featuring up to 8 cores, AMD Radeon 860M/840M Graphics, and 50+ NPU TOPS of AI processing power. Like the Ryzen 9 models, these processors are designed to power Microsoft's Copilot+ experiences. According to AMD, systems featuring the Ryzen AI Max/AI Max PRO and Ryzen AI/AI PRO 300 processors are expected in Q1 2025.
During its keynote, AMD introduced another more affordable and efficient AI-enabled processor series aimed at mainstream consumer systems and less demanding professional workloads. The Ryzen 200 and PRO 200 Series will become available in Q2 2025 with seven and four models, respectively. The offerings range from Ryzen 3 to 9, with up to 8 cores, AMD RDNA 3 graphics and up to 16 NPU TOPS for AI processing, The 2oo and 200 PRO series are designed to balance performance and energy consumption in essential AI-enabled workloads.
