In a press release issued last Tuesday, CoreWeave, the self-described "AI Hyperscaler," has announced plans to acquire Weights & Biases, a leading AI developer platform used by over one million AI engineers worldwide.
Weights & Biases has established itself as a trusted name in the MLOps and LLMOps space since its founding in 2017, serving industry-leading tech companies, such as OpenAI, Meta, NVIDIA, and Snowflake, as well as enterprises like AstraZeneca, Toyota, and Canva. On the other hand, CoreWeave has established itself as a leading AI infrastructure provider that enables customers to develop and deploy state-of-the-art models and deliver novel AI applications
Creating an end-to-end AI platform
CoreWeave CEO Michael Intrator praised Weights & Biases for building "a phenomenal platform to help organizations of any size and across a range of industries to build, deploy, and monitor AI training and inference applications."
The acquisition aims to combine CoreWeave's purpose-built cloud infrastructure with Weights & Biases' renowned developer tools for AI model training, evaluation, and monitoring into a comprehensive end-to-end platform. According to CoreWeave, such a platform will enable AI labs and enterprises to accelerate their development workflows and bring innovations to market faster.
Staying flexible
Until the transaction is complete, both services will continue operating as usual. But even as CoreWeave enacts its plans for an "application development workflow" that combines the strengths of both companies, the company has committed to maintaining the functionality and dependability of the Weights & Biases platform as current customers know it while boosting it with further innovations. CoreWeave has also clarified that Weights & Biases customers will continue to have a choice over the modality in which they deploy applications: on premises or via their preferred infrastructure provider.
Looking Ahead
Lukas Biewald, co-founder and CEO of Weights & Biases, expressed enthusiasm about the merger: "We have long admired CoreWeave. We have a shared alignment of vision and values, and we are obsessively focused on helping our customers get to market faster with our cutting-edge technology and services. [...] We are extremely proud of what we have built at Weights & Biases, and we can't wait to see what we can accomplish together."
CoreWeave's acquisition of Weights & Biases is expected to close in the first half of 2025, pending regulatory approvals and other closing conditions.
