At LlamaCon this Tuesday, Meta revealed a standalone Meta AI app powered by its latest Llama 4 model. Now available for iOS devices and on the web, Meta says the new standalone app will let users "experience a personal AI designed around voice conversations." For desktop users, Meta AI on the web offers enhanced features like improved image generation tools and, in select regions, testing of a rich document editor with PDF export capabilities and document import functionality.

With this launch, Meta is betting on the personalization capabilities it can unlock thanks to the wealth of data Facebook and Instagram users share over time with the company. Existing Facebook and Instagram users can sign into the new standalone app with their accounts, while new users must open a Meta account to start using the assistant.

To enjoy a more personalized experience, users can let Meta AI pick up important information from context. Moreover, they can also choose to share directly details about themselves that they want Meta AI to remember. Users who connect their Facebook and Instagram accounts can also enable the assistant to access their data from those accounts and personalize its responses even further. These personalized response capabilities are already available for users in the US and Canada.

In the new, Llama 4-powered experience, image generation and editing can be done through voice conversations besides text messaging. Additionally, conversational interactions in the app can be enhanced with a voice demo built with full-duplex speech technology that can be switched on for more natural conversational interactions. Rather than simply reading written responses, this technology enables the AI to generate voice responses directly, creating a more seamless experience. An important limitation is that this enhanced voice mode can't access the internet, which means it cannot handle real-time information. The feature is now available in the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

Beyond voice capabilities and personalization, the app includes a Discover feed where users can explore how others have used Meta AI, view popular prompts, and remix them for their purposes. Meta emphasizes that users maintain control over what's shared to their feed. Finally, Meta announced that the new app will merge with the Meta View companion app for Ray-Ban Meta glasses. For some users, this means they will soon be able to begin a conversation in the glasses and continue it on the web or app (but not the other way round). Chats can also be started and continued on the web and app experiences without distinction.
