Anthropic confirms Bay Area biology lab uses Claude with human scientists

Anthropic has established a molecular biology laboratory in the San Francisco Bay Area, according to the company’s account of the new research group. The lab supports fundamental biology research that uses Claude to search data, generate hypotheses and help interpret results. Anthropic says human scientists perform all physical laboratory work.

The company said it formed the research group in spring 2026 and built the lab so one team could work across model training, data analysis and experiments. In an early project, Claude agents searched DNA-sequence data for uncharacterized protein families and proposed candidates. Anthropic’s scientists reviewed the proposals, selected which ideas to pursue and carried out the lab tests.

That workflow differs from earlier reporting that characterized the facility as using Claude-powered robots to conduct experiments. Anthropic’s later first-party account says all lab work is performed by human scientists. It describes Model Hardware Standard, or MHS, as a separate initiative the company has experimented with to accelerate laboratory work, adding that the approach is less suited to the ad hoc workflows used in its current molecular-biology research.

The lab is part of Anthropic’s broader life-sciences push, which includes Claude work in drug discovery. However, the company describes this facility’s focus as fundamental biology rather than drug discovery.
