Apple pilots Live Notes AI recording of Genius Bar customer conversations
Apple is reportedly piloting Live Notes, a tool that records, transcribes and AI-summarizes Genius Bar customer conversations into the repair-session record.
Apple has reportedly begun recording, transcribing and automatically summarizing conversations between Genius Bar staff and customers under an internal pilot called Live Notes. Each AI-generated summary is saved to the repair-session record on the employee’s work iPad.
The pilot revives privacy questions that have trailed Apple since 2019, when an account of contractors listening to Siri voice recordings led to a class-action settlement. Apple has built its brand on privacy, and turning in-store service chats into transcribed, machine-summarized records, even internal ones, cuts against that positioning.
The recording reportedly requires consent from both the employee and the customer, the raw audio is not retained, and store managers cannot see the transcripts. Employees can reportedly edit both the transcript and the AI summary before it is stored. The system is running in a limited number of stores, and Apple has not said whether or how it will expand.
Some store workers have reportedly raised concerns that a tool built to log service interactions could later be repurposed for staff training or performance evaluation, a common path for workplace monitoring software that begins with a narrower stated purpose.
Apple has not publicly announced Live Notes and has issued no first-party description of how the system works, how long summaries are kept, or what safeguards govern access. Those gaps matter for a company whose privacy promises are central to its marketing, and the pilot has not been independently audited.
For now the test is small. Whether Live Notes stays confined to a handful of stores, or rolls out across Apple’s retail fleet with clearer consent disclosures, will show how far the company is willing to push AI into face-to-face customer service.
