DoorDash says third-party AI agents generated only hundreds of orders
DoorDash CEO Tony Xu said outside AI agents have generated only several hundred orders, a cumulative tally dwarfed by the platform’s quarterly volume.
DoorDash CEO Tony Xu said third-party AI agents have generated only “several hundred” orders since those services began operating. The figure offers a rare measure of how little order volume outside assistants currently send to the delivery platform.
DoorDash reported 993 million total orders in the quarter ended Sept. 30, up 28% from a year earlier. The gap is stark, but it does not yield a period-matched market share: the agent count is cumulative over an unspecified period, while the larger figure covers only the third quarter.
Xu disclosed the agent total on DoorDash’s Oct. 29 earnings call, calling it a “fairly low use case.” The company did not provide an exact count, identify every agent included or say when the cumulative measurement began.
The total covers orders initiated through third-party assistants, not DoorDash’s own shopping products. Ask DoorDash, introduced in June, is an in-app conversational search tool that can interpret natural-language requests, recipe links and photos, then build a cart for review. Text DoorDash, introduced in beta in September, lets users order and check out through text messages.
DoorDash also offers a Model Context Protocol connector for compatible third-party or company-built agents. The connector lets those agents find products, build carts, place orders and track deliveries. DoorDash launched it in a limited beta focused on employee ordering, alongside a waitlist and expanded command-line beta access for individual developers.
Xu said everyday food orders were still coming directly to DoorDash. He pointed instead to purchases that require longer consideration, or that an agent might initiate proactively, as potential uses for outside assistants.
