OpenAI launches Admin plugin for ChatGPT Work and Codex

OpenAI introduced an Admin plugin on Aug. 25 that lets authorized workspace administrators inspect usage and carry out supported management actions from ChatGPT Work and Codex. Administrators can direct the assistants to change workspace settings rather than only retrieve administrative information.

According to OpenAI’s announcement, supported tasks include reviewing activity and credit usage, adding or removing members, updating groups, reviewing effective permissions, controlling feature or model access, adjusting usage limits, and approving or denying spending requests. OpenAI says an administrator can analyze workspace information, update a setting, make an authorized change and confirm the result within a single conversation.

The release extends OpenAI’s enterprise administration push beyond earlier ChatGPT Enterprise and Codex product updates. The internal link provides product context and is not evidence for the new plugin’s capabilities.

OpenAI’s documentation says a plugin packages reusable instructions, connected tools and other capabilities. For this product, OpenAI says the Admin plugin maps an administrator’s instruction to a supported read or write action and returns a structured result.

OpenAI says the plugin works within each user’s existing role and permissions, does not grant broader access, and honors workspace policies and approval requirements. It also says administrators can see what they requested, whether a change completed and what changed, and can review actions with broader impact before they are applied. The opened evidence does not include an independent test of those claims.

“The value is far beyond faster reporting,” Kunal Malik, OpenAI’s head of global IT, said in the announcement. “The Admin plugin connects the question to the next supported action, whether that is checking someone’s effective permissions, updating a group, changing a usage limit, or reviewing a spending request. It gives admins a faster way to understand what is happening and take action, while preserving the same permissions and controls we already use.”

OpenAI describes recurring workflows built on the plugin, including routing pending usage requests to Slack or Microsoft Teams for authorized review, and granting feature access when predefined criteria are met while sending exceptions for review.

OpenAI says its own Slack-based ChatGPT Work workflows resolved about 45% of ticket volume at the time of reporting while support volume had roughly doubled. The company did not publish a methodology for those internal figures, and they are not independently audited.

OpenAI’s plugin documentation states that installing a plugin cannot bypass provider or workspace permissions. Its admin controls guidance says capabilities delivered through apps remain subject to role access, authorization, supported actions and approval requirements. OpenAI’s Admin Console documentation describes separate audit-log surfaces for tenant-wide and workspace administrative activity where available, with access depending on role and feature availability.

The opened material does not state whether every action initiated through the Admin plugin is written to a dedicated audit log, how long such records are retained or which fields they capture. The announcement also does not list a complete action inventory, plan-by-plan eligibility, regional availability, a rollout schedule or pricing.

OpenAI says administrators must enable the Admin plugin in ChatGPT workspace settings and install it from the Plugins directory in ChatGPT Work on the web or desktop app.
