OpenAI reports 130,000 ChatGPT users and 95,000-plus Codex users at Oracle
OpenAI says Oracle is using ChatGPT and Codex across recruiting, analytics, engineering and operations, but its case study provides no independent audit of the usage or time-saving figures.
OpenAI says Oracle has 130,000 active ChatGPT users and more than 95,000 active Codex users across recruiting, analytics, engineering and operations. The figures appear in an OpenAI customer case study about Oracle published Thursday.
The counts are company-supplied and were not independently audited in the case study. OpenAI did not define “active,” identify the measurement period or say how much the ChatGPT and Codex user populations overlap. That means the two figures should not be added together as a count of unique employees.
Oracle’s talent acquisition team built a ChatGPT Work tool that takes a job description, researches comparable roles, benchmarks compensation and assesses the available talent pool by location, according to the case study. OpenAI said the workflow cut research time by 98%. Jan Ackerman, Oracle’s senior vice president and global head of talent acquisition, said preparation fell from two to four days to about 15 to 20 minutes. The case study did not disclose the sample, baseline calculation or measurement period behind the 98% claim.
Oracle Applications Lab, which supports some of the company’s core business processes, built an ontology—a structured map of company objects, relationships and rules. Codex uses it to turn plain-language questions into SQL queries. OpenAI said Codex can choose which internal systems to call, gather the relevant information and return an analysis, report or application.
Richard Lam, group vice president of Oracle Applications Lab, described a user getting an almost immediate answer to a question that had previously taken a couple of hours. Lam said the result matched the old manual process when the user checked it. The example is an Oracle executive’s account, not an independently tested measure of speed or accuracy.
The case study also says Oracle site reliability engineers use Codex to gather context about production incidents and retrieve the appropriate response playbook. Lam said a typical simple incident that once took an hour can now be handled in minutes. OpenAI provided no sample size or measurement method for that claim.
The deployment is another example of OpenAI extending ChatGPT and Codex across workplace functions. An expanded Atlassian partnership around Rovo and Codex also covers employee use of Codex and ChatGPT Enterprise.
Lam said the systems do not run on autopilot. According to the case study, people remain responsible for system design, architecture, security, code structure and maintainability.
