OpenAI and Kakao, a leading mobile communications company in South Korea, which also provides Korea's most popular messaging service KakaoTalk, recently announced that they will work together to enhance Kakao's services, including KakaoTalk, with OpenAI's technology. The strategic partnership was revealed on Tuesday during a press conference at the Plaza Hotel in Jung-gu, Seoul. The announcement comes just a day after OpenAI and SoftBank made their new joint venture public, sending a clear message about OpenAI's intentions to strengthen its presence in the Asian markets.
OpenAI and Kakao have outlined three projects that the collaboration will prioritize: a Korean language AI 'agent' powered by OpenAI's models and designed to provide personalized and context-aware responses to users; the more general integration of OpenAI's technologies within Kakao's digital ecosystem, KakaoTalk included; and the deployment of ChatGPT Enterprise to Kakao's employees as a measure to boost productivity through smart workflows.
More generally, both companies expressed their commitment to developing products together in a way that profits from both companies' strengths. The announcement also highlights how the strategic partnership between Kakao and OpenAI aligns with the former's 'AI Model Orchestration' strategy, introduced at last October's if(kakaoAI) developer conference. Kakao's strategy, which consists of integrating Kakao's proprietary models with leading external APIs, aims to deliver best-in-kind digital services to customers.
