Reddit positioned AI-powered search as its next significant business opportunity during its fourth-quarter earnings call, suggesting the technology could become a substantial revenue driver beyond just a product enhancement.
CEO Steve Huffman emphasized that generative AI search excels at Reddit's core strength: answering questions with multiple perspectives from real people. "There's a type of query we're, I think, particularly good at—I would argue, the best on the internet—which is questions that have no answers, where the answer actually is multiple perspectives from lots of people," Huffman said.
The numbers support the strategy. Weekly active users for search grew 30% year-over-year to 80 million, while Reddit Answers, the AI-powered feature, surged from 1 million weekly users in Q1 2025 to 15 million by Q4.
Reddit is working to unify traditional navigation-focused search with AI-generated answers, adding five new languages and piloting "dynamic agents" with media-rich responses. Starting Q3 2026, the platform will eliminate distinctions between logged-in and logged-out users, using AI personalization to make the site immediately relevant to all visitors.
While AI search remains unmonetized, Reddit called it "an enormous market and opportunity." Meanwhile, its content licensing business, which allows AI companies to train on Reddit data, grew 22% to $140 million in 2025.
