The Wikimedia Foundation has recently announced it will adopt a new, more intentional AI strategy with a definitive stance: Wikipedia's human editors will remain at the center of the platform's knowledge ecosystem. In a wiki detailing its newly minted strategy, the Wikimedia Foundation shares that it considered continuing to use AI to support editors only incidentally, but rejected this option as it would risk alienating users, diminishing Wikipedia's relevance, and overloading editors due to the ease with which AI can be leveraged to create convincing written content.

Similarly, the Wikimedia Foundation rejected a strategy centered on investments in AI-assisted knowledge generation. This is not only because AI-generated content is still fraught with downsides (including, but not limited to, vulnerability to biases, hallucinations, and significant invisible human labor), but because the Foundation recognized that an AI-first strategy could discourage its existing volunteers. Thus, rather than replacing volunteers with AI, the Foundation plans to deploy artificial intelligence as a support tool to enhance human contributions.

"The community of volunteers behind Wikipedia is the most important and unique element of Wikipedia's success," stated the Foundation's announcement. Their approach emphasizes human agency, transparency, and open-source AI solutions.

The strategy focuses on four key areas: supporting moderators with AI-assisted workflows, improving information discoverability to save editors' time, automating translation to help share local perspectives, and scaling onboarding through guided mentorship. These areas of impact were planned out considering the tasks at which generative AI already excels. The Wikimedia Foundation also stated that the implementation of this strategy will be guided by its policies, principles, and values (such as privacy and human rights). The strategy implementation will also prioritize open-source and open-weight technologies; emphasize transparency; and approach multilingualism with an appropriate degree of nuance.

The Wikimedia Foundation's human-centered philosophy starkly contrasts with the increasingly commonplace AI implementations that seek to minimize human involvement. Wikipedia, whose content serves as training data for numerous AI models, strives to reinforce and protect the irreplaceable value of human deliberation, consensus-building, and judgment in maintaining reliable encyclopedic knowledge.
