Asian News International (ANI) has sued OpenAI for copyright infringement
Indian news agency Asian News International (ANI) recently filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing the company of using ANI's content to train its models without permission, and of attributing fabricated news stories to the agency, to the detriment of its reputation.
India's news agency Asian News International (ANI) has joined the New York Times and the Chicago Tribune as the latest news organization to file a lawsuit accusing OpenAI of using its content for model training without permission. ANI is also accusing OpenAI of attributing made-up news stories to the agency, posing a threat to ANI's reputation. When prompted for comment by Reuters, an OpenAI spokesperson stated a variation of the same defense OpenAI has used against copyright infringement accusations in the past, namely, that the company uses publicly available information to train its models in ways that are protected by fair use and other related principles "and supported by long-standing and widely accepted legal precedents".
The first hearing for the case happened this Tuesday, where a judge from a New Delhi High Court asked OpenAI to respond to ANI's accusations in detail. Due to the case's complexity, more detailed hearings were deemed necessary, with the next one scheduled for January 28. This lawsuit adds to over a dozen similar lawsuits currently active in the US, two in Canada, and one in Germany.
