The secret to Google's efficiency? Over 25% of its code is now AI-generated

During Google's 2024 Q3 earnings call, CEO Sundar Pichai revealed that AI now generates over 25% of Google's new code (which is then reviewed by engineers), highlighting the company's commitment to AI integration and development efficiency.

Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai delivered a few remarks during the company's 2024 Q3 earnings call, touching upon topics from Google's approach to AI innovation, to Search, Google Cloud, and YouTube performance as a driver of Q3's results. However, one disclosure caught everyone's attention, not only because it reflects that Google is delivering on its promise to infuse AI in everything, but because it shows the impact of AI in software development. Pinchai stated that currently "more than a quarter of all new code at Google is generated by AI, then reviewed and accepted by engineers."

Expectedly, the whole thing was framed in terms of efficiency and speed; thanks to Google's internal coding assistant, engineers can focus on doing more, faster. Moreover, the decision to implement the model, which according to documents obtained by Business Insider earlier this year is codenamed 'Goose', was partially influenced by a broader push to reorganize Google's development teams. Google isn't the only company that has approved AI-powered assistants for internal use. Microsoft reportedly approved the use of its Copilot tool by internal teams to get more developers to use AI tools.
