Vibe coding — loosely, producing code by prompting an AI tool rather than writing it by hand — has made it trivial to open a pull request. The analysis argues that the productivity those tools hand individual contributors is paid for by everyone downstream: the reviewers, maintainers and the long-term trust the projects run on.
It frames the pattern as a tragedy of the commons. Each contributor gains by shipping AI-generated code quickly, while the cost of reading, testing, fixing and maintaining it falls on unpaid maintainers, and, the analysis warns, risks eroding the community engagement open source depends on.
The mechanism is triage. A plausible-looking pull request still has to be read and either merged or rejected, and AI tools can generate them faster than any human can vet them. Volume alone becomes a burden even before questions of correctness or security enter.
The claim rests on a single data-journalism analysis and reflects its author’s framing rather than a peer-reviewed study. It does not quantify how many projects are affected, put a number on the added review burden, or measure whether maintainers are leaving. What it captures is a widely voiced complaint from inside open source now backed by one attempt to look at the data.
